We had a chance to interview Michael D. Krause, President of Sales Sense Payments, Inc., an online merchant service provider that assists businesses with accepting credit card payments. Mr. Krause talked about his business plan and where he sees his company in the near future.
Have there been any unexpected obstacles that have surprised you as a business owner?
Michael D. Krause: I have been on an entrepreneurial journey as a sales trainer, consultant to smaller businesses and simultaneously writing two successful books about selling techniques. All of this has helped me accumulate even more experiences I can share with merchant services clients.
Have you followed the same business plan, or have you had to change course over time?
Michael D. Krause: Yes, and I have been following my business plan but always open to new opportunities.
For you, what is the biggest challenge when it comes to running your own business?
Michael D. Krause: Trying to get everything done. There just aren’t enough hours in the day or the week.
Have there been any big surprises?
Michael D. Krause: How much more difficult it is to get mainstream awareness than I expected it to be.
What is the most rewarding part of running your own company?
Michael D. Krause: Creating my own schedule and driving my own success.
Are you where you thought that you would be at this point in time? Ahead? Behind?
Michael D. Krause: Behind. I would prefer to be much farther ahead in terms of financial goals that I am at this point, despite multiple irons in the fire.
Where do you see your company in the next few years?
Michael D. Krause: The merchant services business will be bustling and expanding into neighboring areas for the foreseeable future.
What advice would you give to someone that may be thinking about starting his or her own business?
Michael D. Krause: Understand that there are no overnight successes and you will have to live and breathe your business for a considerable time to make it successful.
How do you market a business like Sales Sense Payments, Inc?
Michael D. Krause: Through social media, occasional PPC ads, researching and contacting ideal target companies directly through letters and telephone calls to decision makers.
Finally, do you have any employees, and how would you classify your management style?
Michael D. Krause: No, I work with a cadre of freelance people who can supply specific talents when I need them. My management style is to monitor people very closely at first to make sure they know what to do, and do it. Once I have a level of trust with someone, I give them more space in which to operate. And I am a big proponent of praise.
